Last week I encountered an elderly man in the waiting room of my office. He was waiting to see one of the chiropractors I share my office space with. As one does, I asked him, “How are you?” He replied, “Well, I can’t be too good. I’m here, aren’t I?” He said it in a lighthearted manner so I laughed but then took the opportunity to point out that chiropractics is not only for patients who are in pain or unwell and that many people see chiropractors when they are healthy in order to stay well. This short conversation was a reminder that so many people are unaware that their approach to health should be proactive, not reactive. Like brushing your teeth every day and not waiting until you have a cavity to see the dentist.
People also need to be reminded that their approach to health and wellness needs to be not just proactive but multifaceted.
We are complex beings and our wellness regimen needs to be varied enough to address all our complexities. I hear so often that, “I don’t need reiki because I see a chiropractor” or “I don’t need chiropractics because I go to the doctor”. You can’t expect one person to be able to address all your healthcare needs. That would be like brushing your teeth with a dry toothbrush, without water or toothpaste or flossing!
Thinking about it another way, let me ask you what makes a diamond sparkle?
The answer is facets. The more facets, or sides, a diamond has, the more it sparkles. People want sparkly diamonds. We don’t put raw, rough diamonds in jewellery because they look like rocks. It’s not until they are precision cut to become multifaceted gemstones that they become bright and beautiful.
So, if you want to sparkle and be the brightest, most beautiful version of yourself you can be then you need to approach your healthcare in the same manner: you need many facets. Reiki, crystal healing, energy balancing, massage, chiropractics, nutrition, homeopathy, naturopathy, acupuncture, Bowen therapy, craniosacral therapy, Therapeutic Touch, etc., etc. The list is endless (and yes, it can even include your family doctor). There are myriad holistic therapies available and we should be taking advantage of all of them regularly.
So, please, brush your teeth and remember to sparkle!
